Weights

Besides original designs and top workmanship, Disegno is known for its generous amounts of gold and sterling silver in all of its jewellery. Unless required to allow greater light-play into a stone or to make earrings more comfortable, none of the pieces are hollowed out. They are in solid 18k gold, solid 14k gold, or solid sterling silver, with all approximate weighs indicated. Still confused about what the pieces weigh? The following chart will give you a comparable, approximate weight of the jewellery.

Ring Sizes

Admittedly, sizing a ring over the internet is less than ideal. Many sites offer handy little finger sizers that can be printed and the paper form used to get a rough size. Too rough for my liking. The most precise is to use a finger sizer as used by jewellers.

But there are difficulties there too with different scales in use around the world: North America uses a numeric scale starting at 1 and going to about 16+, with a 6-7 roughly the average for women and a 10 roughly the average for men; Europe also uses a numeric scale, but not just one scale, there's a few of them (I found Swiss, French and German scales); Japan also has a numeric scale and the UK uses the Wheatsheaf alphabetic scale from A-Z. A bit of research shows that equivalency tables showing conversions between one scale and another are not even consistent. Eeee gads!

However, that being said, a conversion table follows below. I've also added the equivalent interior diameter in millimetres against which you can measure a ring you have and know to fit. Please use the North American scale when ordering with Disegno.

Please also keep the following in mind when determining your size:

  • The time of day, time of month (for women!) and generally how you are feeling can have an effect on finger sizes. End of the day, pre-menstrual, prescriptions and either being very warm or very cold can affect the size of your finger with puffiness (in the case of the first factors) or contraction in the case of hands that have just come in from the cold.
  • Because my rings are solid, not hollowed out 'behind the scenes', rings such as the top heavy Volcano, Wafer, Roman Column, and the big glass bead rings, need to fit the finger snugly so that they don't 'topple over'. When sizing your finger take this into account. If you have a particularly small finger in relation to its knuckle, these may be harder to fit.
  • Wider bands usually need a bit more size. Why? The flesh between your knuckle and the first joint of your finger has to go somewhere when there's so much metal pushing it around.
  • Similarly, the trios or any other stacking of rings should take this into consideration. There are two widths of finger sizers available. When sizing your finger for a wide band or stacked rings, use the wider finger sizer.
  • You can also take one of your own rings, which you know to fit as you like, to a jeweller and ask to size the ring. They will slip your ring on a graduated ring stick (or 'mandrel') to measure it. There are different methods of using the mandrel. Some will measure off the leading edge of the ring, some will measure into the centre of the band. To be consistent with Disegno's sizing, please measure off the leading edge of the ring - i.e. the furthest up the scale your ring will go. Again, keep in mind if you are measuring from a thin band but are now purchasing from Disegno a wide band, you must allow a bit more additional space.
  • Disegno rings are priced up to ring size 8. For larger rings, please contact me for pricing in your size.

Bangle Sizes

All bangles, except the square bangle, are full rounds. Five sizes are available, extra small, small, medium, large, extra large, based on the following interior diameter dimensions. Custom sizing and shaping is available (e.g. oval), additional costs may be charged, contact me for details. An ideal size bangle should be a little snug going over the widest point of the hand so that it does not hang too low on the wrist. Please indicate size (XS, S, M, L, XL) on the order form.

As with ring sizing, the best way to determine your size is to measure one of your own bangles that you know to fit well, or, in a pinch, stop by your local jewellery store to try something on there. If need be, unworn bangles may be exchanged for another size with just the cost of shipping charged to you.

Extra Small: 5.0 cm (2 in.)
Small: 5.5 cm (2 3/16 in.)
Medium: 6.0 cm (2 3/8 in.)
Large: 6.5 cm (2 9/16 in.)
Extra Large: 7.0 cm (2 ¾ in.)

Diamond Carat Sizes

Diamond weights are measured in metric carats. The following table gives an approximate measurement of the diameter of a round diamond across its girdle, that is, at its widest point. For example, a round full carat diamond will measure approximately 6.5mm across the girdle. And that carat will weigh just one-fifth (0.200) of a gram - just over seven thousandths (0.007) of an ounce. One ounce contains almost 142 carats. See About Jewellery for more information on diamonds.
