About Jewellery » Which do I choose: white gold or platinum?

Both are beautiful, both have their strengths. Here are a few points to consider in making your decision:

  • White gold can not be pure gold because pure gold is yellow. Therefore, white gold is mixed with other alloys, usually base metals such as copper, nickel (to which some people are allergic) and zinc, although it can be mixed with metals from the platinum family, such as palladium. Platinum is inherently white, and if it is alloyed, it is done so with other members of its family, which are also white. Placed side by side, white gold will show a hint of its yellow origins, however, plating white gold with rhodium (platinum family again) will give it a whiter finish.
  • Platinum is more durable than white gold.
  • Platinum is more pure because, in jewellery, it is 950 parts per 1000 platinum and the remaining parts are still of the platinum family and therefore precious metals also.
  • All Disegno jewellery can be fashioned from either white 18k gold or platinum.
  • Platinum is significantly more expensive. Not only is the price per gram significantly higher, but because it has more heft than gold the same ring in platinum will weigh much more than that ring in gold.
